A Lifetime of Leadership in Policing, Public Safety, and Community Service
Chris D. Lewis devoted 36 years to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), rising through the ranks to become Commissioner, a role he held until his retirement in April 2014. As the head of one of Canada’s largest police services, he was responsible for overseeing front-line policing, traffic and marine operations, emergency response units, and major investigations across the province—leading more than 9,000 personnel with integrity, professionalism, and vision.
From the Front Lines to the Command Table
Chris’s career was defined by a deep understanding of operational policing and a commitment to excellence in leadership. He served across Ontario in a variety of ranks and roles, gaining experience in local detachments, tactical operations, and investigative work. His ability to lead in complex and high-pressure environments saw him command key units, including the Eastern Region, Criminal Investigation Branch, Investigations Bureau, Emergency Management Bureau, and the Communications and Technology Services Bureau.
He also completed long-term assignments with the RCMP and the Criminal Intelligence Service of Ontario, playing a vital role in inter-agency collaboration and intelligence-led policing.
Service Beyond the Badge
Even while leading one of Canada’s most respected policing organizations, Chris remained grounded in service to others. He has consistently supported community-based groups, charities, and service clubs, recognizing the importance of giving back beyond the uniform.
He is an active member of the Veterans Club of Barrie, the Royal Canadian Legion, and the Simcoe & Grey Foresters Regiment Honourable Guard. His past leadership roles include serving on the Board of St. John’s Ambulance Simcoe County, the Provincial Board of Special Olympics Ontario (SOO), Chairing the Torch Run for SOO through the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, and working with Orillia’s Places for People to support housing solutions for those in need.
An Honoured Leader with National and International Credentials
Chris’s leadership has been recognized at the highest levels. He is a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, one of the most prestigious honours in Canadian policing. His educational achievements include graduation from the FBI National Academy Program, the FBI National Executive Institute, and the Canadian Police College’s Executive Development Program, reflecting his commitment to continuous learning and global best practices in policing and leadership.
A New Chapter: Educator, Author, and Public Safety Voice
Since retiring from active policing, Chris has continued to influence the conversation around law enforcement and leadership. He lectures widely across North America, sharing insights from his career on topics ranging from ethics to operational command. In 2016, he published his first book, Never Stop on a Hill, which explores lessons in leadership and personal growth. All proceeds from the book support Special Olympics Ontario, a cause close to his heart.
Today, Chris serves as the Public Safety Analyst for the CTV Television Network, appearing regularly in local and national news segments to offer expert commentary on major policing and security stories.
