In each issue of Trillium magazine we profile QCC members to learn more about their roles and what they do outside the office. QCC strives to celebrate all its members- from those who are currently working or those that are retired but continue to contribute to their communities.

Sonia Melerowicz  – French Language Services Coordinator, FLS Land and Resources Cluster
Summer 2019, Number 1

As the French Language Services Coordinator for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs, Sonia works to integrate the French Language Services Act into both ministries’ operations and service-delivery processes. “It’s up to me to identify the FLS priorities of my ministries based on the development and growth needs of the province’s Francophone communities,” says Sonia, who joined the OPS in 2017 after working in the private sector in Canada and her native France. “I believe that the cultural heritage of the French-speaking population of Ontario should be preserved for future generations,” she says, adding that she hopes her work is “contributing to its perennity.”

What do you enjoy most about your work?

My work is broad, which allows me to be involved with many different projects while coordinating with multiple teams and even sometimes several ministries. I enjoy being able to help, advise, and guide staff in interpreting the act and ensuring compliance with it. The people I serve are diverse, from Policy Advisers to HR advisers, and from Executive Assistants to assistant Deputy Ministers.

Have you faced any challenges in your role?

When I first joined the OPS, it was a whole new world for me. I come from the private sector, but also from another country, where the government system is different. I had the chance to be paired with a colleague through the Buddy Program, which is designed to enhance the on-boarding process. The mentoring relationship helped me to quickly learn to navigate the organization’s cultural and social norms, feel at home, and become productive in my job.

How do you like to spend your free time?

Writing is a passion of mine. It gives me the ability to express my inner thoughts that I normally don’t get the chance to share during my workday. I value and appreciate all forms of art. The one thing I love most about writing is the idea that it can stimulate a person’s imagination when they’re immersed in another world.
